The first boats sailed along the Aspe river in the 18th century... at the time they were just called rafts.
The French Royal Navy exploited the forests of the Aspe for the manufacture of ships’ masts. They were transported along the ‘Chemin de La Mature’ to The Gave. Here the poles, or soon to be masts were assembled as rafts which were steered down to Bayonne with a crew on board... a festival in May tells the story.
Downstream from Escot, as you enter of Oloron, you can have a go at rafting or hydro speed surfing.
This is a region of rivers, torrents and streams. The Aspe Valley has many hidden and secret canyons!
